LAUNCH LOST
(New Zeeland Preu duoeiation) AUCKLAND, May 12. A fishing charter launch was pounded to pieces on the south head of Manukau Harbour on Saturday night after becoming stranded.
The 19 persons aboard the 40-foot Callie were able to walk ashore before a heavy westerly swell developed and wrecked the boat. Before the swell came up some of them went back to help the skipper, Mr F. G. Vickery, of Onehunga, save the boat. Just as the tide was lifting
her clear one of the anchor ropes broke. She swung broadside on, then stern on with waves washing into her. The skipper decided to abandon her and those on board struggled through five feet of water to the shore about 200 yards away. One of them, Mr E. M. Goldsmith, of St Helliers, said later: “It was quite terrifying. When we left her, waves were breaking her to bits. The water was up to our armpits as we struggled ashore.”
