MEDICAL GRANT
Big Cut In Research (N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 12. Big cuts in medical research would be made as a result of a big reduction in the funds ( available to the Golden Kiwi I Distribution Committee for I the promotion of medical re- ■ search, the acting-chairman | (Sir Douglas Robb), who presided over the committee’s half-yearly meeting, said in Auckland. The committee had before it requests for grants totalling $261,000, but had at its disposal only $40,000 for the .half-year. The annual grant to the committee has been cut from $200,000 to $lOO,OOO. Sir Douglas said this meant that support for some valuable research had to be stopped, requests for research important to the community’s health 'had to be turned down, and •some senior scientists supi ported by the committee ■would lose their positions in | the near future—and might ibe lost to New Zealand alto- • gether. “The committee believes it is most unfortunate that the reduction in the grant should occur at this critical time In the development of medical and dental education and re’search,” said Sir Douglas Robb.
