RACING Baudelaire May Win At Trentham Today

"The Press’* Special Service

WELLINGTON.

Baudelaire will be the horse to watch at Trentham today as he advances his preparation for the Waikato and Great Northern Steeplechases. He is one of several jumpers being prepared for important races at the winter carnival which will open at Ellerslie on Queen’s Birthday week-end.

Baudelaire will at* tempt the Newtown Steeplechase with a background of a firstday fourth in similar company. That gallop and his earlier minor placing at Marton have brought him to his peak.

At Marton Baudelaire, after a long season hunting and show jumping, was beaten for pace. He drifted back and ran disappointingly for third. The race sharpened him and at Trentham on Wednesday he shared some of the pace, finishing a creditable fourth. Again he derived benefit from the outing. He will run in the Waikato Steeplechase next week and to fit him for this, his owner trainer. Mr A. Koolman, will start him again tomorrow. In the Newtown Steeplechase Baudelaire will meet Blue Defaulter, whose main mission this winter is the Great Northern Steeplechase. Blue Defaulter is the more seasoned at this stage, al-

erously at Trentham he drew pointed attention to Comrade's prospects. The Hello Peter horse has gone ahead rapidly in the last few days and the wetter the track the better it will suit him. Comrade’s main rival will be Garnishee, which has no northern engagements. After wins at Waipukurau and Trentham. however Garnishee looks a ready-made favourite for today’s race. The hurdle race will be the first leg of the concession double, and the second leg will be the Courtenay Handicap, for two-year-olds. With Rajah Sahib out, Mayo Gold should have matters very much her own way, even with top-weight of fist 71b. Her only real rival appears to be Mitamit, which was a little unlucky on Wednesday. The best of the others could be Royal Tudor and Honda. The gelds are:—

though Baudelaire’s brilliance could make him hard to beat over the shorter distance at Trentham. On Wednesday Blue Defaulter went to the front in a race in which nobody wanted the lead. He fought on gamely in the last furlong or two, but had no answer for Fleeting Moment’s challenge. Vita Boy another Great Northern entrant could be a danger, too, as he went a bold race on Wednesday. That outing did him good. The field has fresh material In Teak which is good in really heavy ground. However he has been off the scene for some time, and it could be a little early yet to expect much from him.

Final Trial

The other jumping race today is the Brooklyn Hurdles in which Comrade will have nis final jumping trial for the Great Northern Hurdles. He was not entered at the Waikato meeting so he will tackle the Great Northern without the benefit of experience over jumps on a right-handed track. In his only hurdling appearance this winter he went well for second to Rahpete at the Woodville meeting. When Rahpete went on to race gen-
