“Wage Order Anticipation”

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 10.

The workers’ member of the Arbitration Court (Mr A. B. Grant) said yesterday he had evidence that a number of industries were recosting in anticipation of a new general wage order. The court, which was hearing an application by the Federation of Labour for a 7.6 per cent general wage order, adjourned yesterday until May 28 for final submissions. The Secretary of the Treasury (Mr N. R. Davis), commenting on Mr Grant’s statement, said the Price Tribunal would be interested in hearing of any recosting taking place. Mr Grant: Then I will probably become what is known to some circles as a “pimp” and inform the Price Tribunal. Mr Davis said earlier that the Government had said it could resist higher costing of products after devaluation.
