Fire In Convent
Fire severely damaged a bedroom on the third floor of the Church of England’s convent of the Comunity of the Sacred Name, at the cornei of St Asaph Street and Barbadoes Street, about 5.08 p.m. on Thursday. Three machines from headquarters answered the call. The brigade was called at 3.28 p.m. to the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company’s factory, Langdons Road, where a fire caused only slight damage. A fire in Riccarton Road in a car belonging to Mrs R. Sharman, of 21A Waimairi Road, about 10.3 a.m., damaged wiring. A fire at 2.14 p.m. in a rubbish truck in the City Council yard in lower Colombo Street caused no damage. The Sydenham brigade was returning from a chimney fire when it was directed to the yard adjacent to the Sydenham fire station. A chimney fire at a house at 92 Hoon Hay Road, occupied by Mr Maurice Webb, at 1.46 p.m., caused no damage.
