SKOGLUND LOSES BOWLS FINAL

(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright)

SYDNEY.

The New Zealand international bowler, W. P. Skoglund, yesterday failed in a gallant bid to win the city club masters singles at Sydney. He was beaten, 31-18, by the world champion pairs title-holder, G. Kelly.

Skoglund made a much harder fight than the score indicated, but failed to recover from a disastrous de-

flcit of four on one of the early ends, to trail 5-12. . Skoglund then held his position but was still 14-21 behind after 20 ends. Kelly then scored a three and two ends, and followed these with another four, to lead 28-15. The result was then a foregone conclusion, but it took Kelly three more ends to win the match. Skoglund scored a great semi-final victory against Sydney’s champion of masters title-holder, F. Soars, by 31-18. Skoglund was 8-13 down to Soars, and began his recovery with a three. Then he threw long ends, and with a superb display of controlled bowls, scored on six successive ends to convert his deficit into a 16-13 lead. Both players began to concentrate on draw shot play in a game of high standard, but Skoglund steadily forged ahead.
