NEW COMMISSIONER

The next District Commissioner of Works in Christchurch will be Mr D. A. Lane, district civil engineer since 1962. He will take up his position in August when the present commissioner, Mr D. B. Dallas, retires. Before Mr Lane joined the Ministry of Works 30 years ago, he worked for the Christchurch Drainage Board, the Kaikoura County Council, the Dunedin City Council and the Dunedin Drainage Board. He was on the ministry’s staff at Dunedin from 1938 to 1946 until he was appointed its senior engineer at Waikouaiti. Promoted to district design engineer at Christchurch in 1953, Mr Lane was responsible for the control of the quality of all civil engineering work in the

district, including highways. The district covers more than half the South Island.
