Sydenham League Club To Explain

The Sydenham Rugby League Club will be requested to furnish an “immediate explanation” to the Canterbury board of control giving its reasons for playing two unregistered players in its senior team.

’ The players, R. Scoringe and N. Mattison, played against Hornby on Saturday. Neither had transferred from the Shirley club, members of the board alleged. The registrar of team cards (Mr P. Yaxley) was also requested to supply cards to ascertain whether Scoringe or Mattison had played for Shirley this season. The secretary (Mr D. G. Gaynor) said that the Sydenham secretary (Mr J. S. C. Heaney) had telephoned him requesting permission to play Scoringe. Mr Heaney told Mr Gaynor that Scoringe had played only one third grade game last season.

After conferring with the board’s chairman (Mr D. C. Wilson), Mr Gaynor informed Sydenham that Scoringe was not eligible to play. Mr Heaney said that it was intended to play Scoringe and “bring the transfer problem into the limelight,” Mr Gaynor said. Mr L. R. Huston: H«« Sydenham applied to Shirley tor a transfer? Mr Gaynor: I understand so. No written application has been received by the board, only a verbal request. “Both Scoringe and Mattison went to the Weat Coast last season with the Shirley team and played,’’ said Mr J. Anderson. Mr W. A. Whitehead said that he had been told that Shirley had refused to tranafer the two players. Player Suspended A 17 years grade player. A. Coughlan (Halswell), was susS ended for two matches by the oard of control. In his report the referee (Mr F. Duane) said that he had previously warned Coughlan and several other Halswell players for using bad language. Coughlan used bad language again just before the end of the

match, soon after a player had received attention for injury. The board upheld a recoin mendation from its judicial committee to suspend Coughlan. 17 Years Squad The Canterbury 17 years training squad from which the Rothmans tournament team will be selected is:— P. Durant, J. Jackomelli, B. Good, M. Barker, P. Jones (Lin wood), I. Doonan, T. Reuben, M. Fuller, T. Broughton. D. Brown (Kalapol); W. Wright, S. Austin, R. O’Neil (Hornby): N. Taylor, K.
