GOLFING CLASH
The Canterbury Golf Association has ensured that tomorrow’s provincial men’s foursomes championship will be one of the least glamorous for several years. The tournament is being played at Shirley links while Canterbury’s top nine players are out of the city. R. C. Murray will be in Timaru, and the next eight are representing the province against Wellington in the annual prelude to the Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament.
It is difficult to see M. W. Stanley (Kaiapoi) and R. B. Townsend (Avondale), both green-keepers at Shirley, being headed. They shared the championship last year and were second equal in 1966.
R. H. Bradley and R. E. Hobbs, who had the thirdbest 36 holes last year, might be the strongest opposition. The other useful teams are T. M. Stout and A. K. Hynd, and J. Allin and D. L. Beggs. Last year, both these teams were handily placed after the first round, but their scores soared in the afternoon.
