Port Charges

Sir, —1 was surprised to read today statements by some members of the Lyttelton Harbour Board accusing the Railways Department of unfair trading because they had reduced meat freight rates from the Christchurch area to Timaru by an alleged 18 2/3 per cent. In the same issue the Harbour Board announced it would reduce the charges for the crane ship Rapaki by 50 per cent ih some instances, and the port charges of cruise ships by a similar amount, plus other port charge reductions of a lesser amount on other items. One is tempted to wonder if the Timaru Harbour Board will take the same vie# on both situations. In other words, It is quite fair for Lyttelton to cut rates up to 50 per cent to attract trade from Timaru, but not fair for the railways to cut rates by 16 2/3 per cent to aid the national economy by cheapening the cost of exporting meat— Yours, etc., ONE MAN’S MEAT.
