Tribute To Headmaster
More than 500 past and present members of the committee of the parent-teacher association and the staff of the Spreydon School gathered on Wednesday evening to pay tribute to Mr C. L. Harper, headmaster since 1949, who will retire from teaching this week. Mr and Mrs Harper were presented with a voucher to provide central heating throughout their home. Speakers who paid tribute to Mr Harper as a teacher, administrator, sportsman and disciplinarian were Mr R. Cooper, school committee chairman in 1949; Mr C. Powley, P.T.A. president; Miss C. Stewart, former pupils; Mr I. Miller, past and present teachers; and Mr R. Fehsenfeld, present school committee chairman. It was noted that the school bad a roll of 302 when Mr Harper arrived and that now, in spite of extra schools in the area, the roll was 705.
Wosd Retires.—Waikato’s captain for the last two seasons. D. R. Wood, yesterday announced his retirement from representative Rugby. He will continue playing club Rugby.
