New Laboratory For Consumer Institute
A new testing laboratory is being built in Tuam Street for the Consumers’ Institute.
The one-storey building, in permanent materials, has a floor area of 4000 sq. ft and is expected to be ready in June. The building will have an office which will deal with the affairs of the consumer committee in Christchurch. While this laboratory in Christchurch is the only one owned by the organisation, it will continue to make use of other test facilities in Government departments and at universities. According to the technical
adviser to the Consumer Council in Wellington (Mr T. R. Pollard), larger premises will enable the scope of the organisation's testing to be increased. For the last two years the organisation has been working from cramped quarters in a temporary testing laboratory in Durham Street. Mr Pollard said that when the move was made into the new premises the staff would be enlarged and more testing equipment would be installed.
He said that a second storey might be added later.
