MANANA IMPRESSES

Manana and Reyal Master, twe runners far Riccarten In the Gleaming Stakes at Trantham next week, were companions in one of the few gallops on the trial grass on their home course yesterday. Manana heightened interest in his prospects In the $5OOO Trentham race by winning the mile gallop easily in Imin 46 2-ssec. He was ridden by his race rider, A. J. Stokes. Royal Master, ridden by C. T. Wilson, finished just ahead of Running Scared, which will be taken to Trentham for his hurdling debut.

Manana and Royal Master will meet on level terms—they have 7st 81b in the Gloaming Stakes. Having won a Wellington Handicap last season under 7st 111 b, and having won twice more in the meantime, Manana has none the worst of it in the weights at Trentham.

In his latest racing the eight-year-old has shown he is anything but a spent force. His fourth in the Great Easter Handicap and close second in the Templeton Handicap at Riccarton last month were good runs. Royal Master also comes in for reckoning for the Gloaming Stakes after seconds in the George Adams and Great Autumn Handicaps at the C.J.C. autumn meeting. No rider has yet been engaged for Royal Master, which will be taken north on Sunday. Manana, Running Scared, and

Arabian Princess will also travel on Sunday. Millie Small, Royal Master's conqueror in the Great Autumn Handicap, will race at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on May 21 if her connections are satisfied with her weight. Mr T. I. Smith had planned to wait for the Grand National meeting, but the My Pal mare freshened quickly after her Easter campaign, and a more active programme would probably keep her mere settled. Millie Small sprinted five furlongs with Hombre and Tallc in Imin 4 3-ssec on the trial grass at Rlccarton yesterday. Tallc was going keenly with a slight lead over his companions after running the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. Lovely Clover (P. J. Daly) was taken over the trial steeplechase course at a hunting pace.
