WAHINE DEATHS
Inquest Today
(N Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 2.
The inquest into the deaths of 51 passengers and crew in the Union Steam Ship Company’s inter-island ferry Wahine will be held in Wellington tomorrow.
About 10 witnesses, excluding pathologists, are expected to give evidence. A large crowd is expected, including the relatives of those who died.
The inquest will be held before the Wellington Coroner (Mr J. Meltzer). Mr Meltzer said tonight that the inquest was “entirely different” from the formal enquiry being held on the disaster. “Under the Act I must bring in a finding on how, when and where these people died,” he said. “The Marine Department inquiry is to find how the ship went on the rocks."
