April Road Toll 50

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 2. The slight improvement in the road toll during the first quarter of this year was gradually slipping away, said the Minister of Transport, Mr Goydon. Fifty people were killed during April, the worst month for fatalities this year. “Although it is an improvement over the 53 people killed in April last year it is a far cry from the 35 killed in April, 1966,” Mr Gordon said. > The figure for all casualties this year has yet to be confirmed, but the Transport Department estimates that during the four months at least 6000 persons have been injured on the roads. Mr Gordon said the accident statistics showed an increase in cases involving loss of control in adverse conditions.
