Transplant Proposed
(N.Z P.A. -Reuter—CopvHJhi) CAPE TOWN, May 2. The heart transplant surgeon, Dr Christiaan Barnard, disclosed today that South Africa’s first pancreas transplant will be attempted soon at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. The pancreas is a long, secreting gland. behind the lower part of the stomach. It produces the vital juices that aid the digestion and also insulin, the lack of which causes diabetes. Dr Barnard Mid he would not be performing the operation himself because it was “Immensely complex.” It would be done by the hospital’s diabetes specialists.
