TANKER ABLAZE
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) SINGAPORE, April 28.
The abandoned Liberian tanker Assimi II is still blazing furiously today 30 miles south of Singapore, despite almost round-the-clock attempts by Royal Navy ships to extinguish the fire.
Fuel leaking from the cargo is feeding the blaze and hampering fire-fighting operations. The tanker caught fire on Friday morning, near the Indonesian island of Tandjunguban, while she was on her way to Saigon. One crewman was killed and three injured. Two others are trapped on board and are presumed dead. The remainder of the crew abandoned ship.
