RUAPEHU LESS ACTIVE
Volcanic activity on Mount Ruapehu appears to have dropped, the Press Association reports.
Yesterday steam was issuing from the mountain but there were no new eruptions of ash.
On Saturday the mountain was coated with ash down to 3800 ft
Throughout Saturday the mountain erupted ash. Two D.S.IR. men who reached the summit saw large boulders being thrown into the air.
The chief ranger at the Tongariro National Park, Mr J. W. Mazey, said yesterday that the seismograph near the Chateau Tongariro had shown a drop in activity.
Steam clouds continued to rise 1000 ft to 3000 ft above the summit of the 9175 ft peak.
The slopes Of Paretetaitonga Peak had a good covering of ash yesterday. Ash was also visible above the snowfields on the north-western slopes.
