He then spurted clear and fought on gamely to win by a short length. Sheer Delight, which was slow away and tangled just Inside the last half-mile, finished solidly for second, a neck in front of another strong finisher in Ghandi, which had only John Watts and Worthy Guest behind him when the field settled down. The win favourite, Garcon Roux, was very slow away from the second line and was 10 lengths from the leaders with six furlongs left. He put In a stronger run wide out from the half-mile and in spite of suffering a check near the three furlongs, he finished right up fourth, just ahead of Clandeboye, which was checked when Frozen tired early In the run home. Glide In went a fair race for sixth, followed by Waiata and Frozen. COURSE DOUBLE Golden Splendour and Doctor Scott, both at double-figure odds, formed the winning oncourse doubles combination, returning 3239.75 for 31. The Golden Splendour—PambiU concession paid 3136.28 for 31. Golden Splendour was checked and fortunate to escape serious trouble when the leader, Aqua Song, propped at the end of a furlong. D. A. Morland recovered quickly with him and had him handy in aeventb place with'five furlongs left. Golden Splendour sprinted up near the three furlongs and joined Batavia in front on the home turn. He had a short lead at the straight entrance and fought on to win by a length. Dollar Man came on gamely under pressure to finish second, two lengths in front of Northern Ways, which was a fair way back until late. Emulate looked unlucky In fourth place, with Batavia, Aqua Song and Prince John next.

Doctor Scott made a successful fresh start when he won the Bayfield Handicap. He drifted badly early and looked to be out of the race. D. J. Townley gradually Improved with him and he was sixth racing to the straight. He challenged wide out on the track and won going away by half a length from the promising Pamblll.

Chief Walk, after being handy all the way, was a close third, clear of Codex and Light View, which broke just outside the final furlong. Kimargo, which broke twice, was beaten off next.

LED ALL WAY Lucky Wood, a smart four-year-old by Flight Adios from Sliver Wood, led from end to end in the Dunedlh Handicap. She bad too much in reserve for her rivals in the run home and won handily by a short length.

Erin's Smile, which had to wait until later before securing a run through, finished fairly well for second, halt a length in front of Glen Bell. Cardigan Lass, which trailed Lucky Wood to the straight, battled on for fourth another half-length back, just ahead of the favourite, Dunluce Castle, which showed speed after breaking and being checked.
