RACING Might Fancied In Marlborough Cup

The Awapuni trainer, E. Temperton, has probably saddled more winners at Blenheim than any other trainer in recent years.

The combined efforts of Might, Grand Coeur and Gold Mint could give the stable another major victory on the course in the Marlborough Cup tomorrow.

Might, a top sprinter earlier in his career, has been switched to jumping and middle-distance racing with highly encouraging results this season. His most recent race on the flat was the Goodbehere Memorial at Feilding on Easter Monday. In that event he ran third to Game and Cox There were two victories on Might’s record last month. The first was on the flat in the Leopard Gold Cup at Hastings and the other was as a hurdler at the Opunake meeting.

It will be surprising if Grand Coeur fails to run well His first run on previous South Island campaigns have invariably been his best. This Wellington-owned Ruthless gelding has won three of the last five Nelson Cups and two major races at Blenheim. Grand Coeur has been second twice from three starts in a fresh campaign. Last time out he was the runner-up to Agricolist in the high-weight at Tauherenikau on Easter Monday.

Gold Mint was one of the star hacks at this meeting 12 months ago. Although victory has eluded him this season be has some useful placings close up on his record. The most recent of those was a fourth in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Tauherenikau last Saturday week. Grand Coeur and Gold Mint will form a totalisator bracket Jen Hai and Look Up will be other strong North Island prospects in the top-half of the handicap. Trentham Placing

One of Jen Hai’s top runs would almost certainly make it a top-weight’s victory. He has not won this season but one of his notable placings during the summer was a third to Udare and Amie in the Asian Racing Conference Handicap at Trentham in January. He was also the

runner-up in the Marton Cup and Pahiatua Jubilee Cup. Two sprint races and a run against the open stayers at Tauherenikau yesterday—he ran second to Agricole—has obviously brought Jen Hai to peak Look Up has two middle distance wins close up on his record. The first was at the Wairoa meeting in February and the other was in the Hutt Handicap at Trentham last month.

Certain, Jay Ribbon and Glocca Morra, from Wingatui, Count Down, from Reefton, and Sir Limond and Kalimera, from Riccarton, are all form runners from South Island stables. W. D. Skelton will ride either Certain or Jay Ribbon. The former was the runner-up in two of his three starts at Riverton during Easter,

Jay Ribbon was the star hack stayer at the C.J.C. autumn meeting. Glocca Morra has two middledistance wins close up on her record and so has Sir Limond. But the latter requires a firm track to show his best form. The same applies to Count Down and Kalimera.

His Lordship will strengthen the chance of a light-weight victory for the North Island. He capped off some useful form with a middle distance win in hack class at Tauherenikau last Saturday week. The Marlborough Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The second leg will be the Stewards’ Handicap in which Colorado Boy is likely to be the popular fancy. Second Leg Fancy Colorado Boy, a member of S. A. Brown s team, improved a very sound record and earned open-class rating with two decisive wins against the hack milers at Tauherenikau the week-end before last. Tomorrow he will be trying to keep that record intact in the hands of W. D. Skelton. Augusto will be another promoted hack from the North Island high on the list of popular fancies. He was also a dual winner in hack class at Tauherenikau, then ran second in the hack sprint at Otaki last week under top-weight of 9-4. Wilma Rudolph, from the Temperton stable, will also have solid backing. She was beaten a head by Gymkhana in the open sprint at Tauherenikau on Easter Monday.

Bourbon Lass, if this race ts chosen for her, and Hyfort. a member of the powerful Ropiha team, could be the best of the others from the North Island.

Although on form Jay Ribbon would appear to have a strong

chance, the top-weight, Debbie Marie, might be the South Island's best. On top of the ground this Reefton trained sprinter could be a major contender.
