Humphrey Wins Cup
Humphrey gained his third successive win in rdcent weeks with a minimum of effort in the New Brighton Cup at Addington Raceway yesterday. He paced the two miles in the splendid time of 4min 20 4-ssec on a dead track and won easing up from the pacemaker, Mister Chips.
Humphrey, a six-year-old gelding by Morano from Dalene, is raced in partnership by his Hinds trainer, W. E. Lowe, and Mrs Lowe. He is in splendid form at present, but will have only limited opportunities during the remainder of the season.
Humphrey raced on the outside of Pancho Boy and not far from Mister Chips for most of the way. Doctor Barry, Co Pilot, Allakasam, Spry, and Disband followed. Humphrey and Mister Chips drew away from the field on the home turn, with Humphrey having control a furlong out. Humphrey did not have to give of his best to win by two lengths and a half from Mister Chips. Allakasam, the backmarker on 36 yards, battled on gamely for third four lengths from Mister Chips, with a similar break back to Co Pilot, which shaded Spry and Disband. Doctor Barry and Pancho Boy followed at intervals. 1 . ■ $229 DOUBLE Udette and Warily, both out-of-form runners, combined to win the on-course double, returning $229.30 for $l. The Udette-John Peel concession double paid $24.30 for $l. Udette was late coming on the scene in the Somme Stakes. She responded well and won by a head to bring a long overdue change of luck to her driver, J. G. Crofts. April Showers, after receiving a good run close to the pace, fought on for second, a nose in front of Cathpete, which looked the likely winner 50 yards out. Wipe Out did well to finish fourth after being all but knocked down near the mile post. Dieman Lad, Stylos, and Young Prince were close up next. Warily got up in the last stride to shade the pacemaker,
John Peel, by a nose in the i Passchendaele Stakes. Alandria had to change course in the run home and did well to finish third half a length back, with a neck to Senator Frost, which tired slightly after rushing up on the home turn. Late Frost was not disgraced in fifth place, a nose behind Senator Frost, with half a neck to Benmore, which was clear of the favourite, First Pick, which received the run of the race to the straight. Battle Star broke before 'the start and again near the mile post. EASY WIN All Alone, an unlucky fourth in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, proved a class above her rivals in the Gallipoli Stakes. She took the lead with three furlongs left and quickly opened up a break on her rivals. At the finish she was still under a hold with a lead of four lengths and a half over Final Donn, which received a poor run and did well to finish so close. Chichester, a stablemate of the winner, was in or near the lead all the way. He held on for third, half a length from Final Donn, with two lengths to Carsonelli, which tired a little after making the pace. Oscar made up ground for fifth, well clear of Deodatus, which broke under pressure near the furlong. Merrin, Select Way, Peter Creed, Transmitter Sound, and Niloc lost ground at the start. ALL THE WAY Wairakau. having his first start since Boxing Day, led
practically from end to end in the Messines Stakes. He raced right away from his rivals over the final furlongs and won by two lengths and a half.
Palman, the favourite, did well to finish second as he tangled at the start and was in trouble later. He was last of the main bunch at the five furlongs and put in a most determined run for his placing. This Time, after being handy enough on the inner until the straight entrance, fought on for third, half a head from Palman and a neck in. front of Stormy Lane, which finished strongly from a good way back. Happy Hal was only a nose away fifth, clear of Kelway Bay and Authentic. Jink and Ten Grand broke early. Boy Logan and Queensway pulled hard early and dropped right out. SECOND WIN Release and M. Holmes combined to gain their second win in little more than a month when they beat Trampus narrowly in the Navy Stakes. Release was prominently placed all the way. Trampus was always well placed and held second from Heidelberg. The favourite, officer Kelly, after being pushed back to last while attempting to work clear, put in « tremendous run to finish fourtn, ahead of another solid finisher. Squire’s Hanover. Flying King broke near the straight entrance, as did Seafield Countess. Zan Star, and to a lesser degree, Officer Kelly, meeting trouble as he dropped back.
