ST HELENS HOSPITAL
140 Beds Will Be Provided St Helens Hospital, which would become Christchurch Women’s Hospital, would provide accommodation for 140 beds, said the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s medical superintendent-in-chief (Dr L. M. Berry) at a meeting of the board. He described alterations necessary to the clinic area at the hospital and said there would be pressure from departments soon for more space. As the hospital would have more beds than Burwood Hospital, extra clerical services and other facilities would have to be provided. The chairman (Dr L. C. L. Averill) said it was planned to unveil a plaque and redesignate the hospital on September 3. Mr L. A. Bennett reported that although there was a lower priority for a new kitchen and dining room at Burwood Hospital, he hoped approval would be given to go ahead on this and a proposed new dental department in May. First priority was (or geriatric wards and an occupational therapy department at Princess Margaret Hospital.
