Request To Minister Over Vaccinations
A request to the Minister of Health (Mr McKay) that anti-tuberculosis B.C.G. vaccinations be resumed for pupils at secondary schools in the South Island is planned by the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
Further relevant statistical information is being gathered before a letter is sent. Mr R. G. Armstrong, who at a previous meeting urged that vaccinations be carried out, said with the anniversary of the World Health Organisation laudatory statements had been made all over the country about improved health. “But don’t make hypocrites out of yourselves,” he told board members. Every member of Parliament and local body member in the South Island should be behind the move.
Miss M. B. Howard, M.P., recalled that B.C.G. vaccination had been introduced when she was Minister of Health. “We should investigate
■ whether the disease is in- ; creasing and make sure we ■ are not slipping over this vac- • cination,” she added. i Mr Armstrong said the inI crease in tuberculosis had ■ not been great, but it had not decreased to a level where I the World Health Organisal tion recommended discontinuation of the vaccine.
