Objection To Rating

With the closing of the Lyttelton Hospital the Lyttelton Borough Council has assessed the property for rates, and the North Canterbury Hospital Board objects. It opposes the move, not because of the amount assessed, but because it objects to being rated at all. At a meeting of the board it was decided to proceed with an appeal against the intention.

The Health Department has suggested that the board sell the property to the Lyttelton Rotary Club, which plans to use it for a home for the aged. The purchase price would be subject to a Government subsidy, the department states.

It was reported that this would speed up disposal of the property and the necessary moves were under way.
