INTER-CLUB HOCKEY University In Winning Form
University continued its good form when it beat High School Old Boys, 5-0. in the second round of senior men's hockey matches played at the Polo Grounds yesterday. Results were: University S, Old Boys 0. Selwyn 3, Linwood 0.8. 2. Harewood 3, Sydenham. 2. Hailey 0.8. 4, Woolston 1. UNIVERSITY V. OLO BOYS For many years Old Boys and University have been keen rivals In senior hockey and their matches have produced some brilliant hockey. Yesterday’s was no exception, but the surprising feature was the margin of victory: one of the highest in the games between these two teams. University, with its welldrilled forward line and intelligent defence, controlled the match, but Old Boys deserved better than a 5-0 loss. Their dogged defence repelled many of the swift University attacks, but the ekiWul ball con-
I trol and short passing of the I University forwards posed too I many problems. r M. Thomson (right-wing) had > an excellent game for University. His ball control, stickwork and positional play contributed much to University’s win. The inside-forwards, J. Christenson, B. Malster and J. Barren, combined well and were a constant threat to the Old Boys defence. I But the outstanding player i was the University centre-half, I S. Maister. His cool and skllI ful control of play, his accurate ■ distribution, and his efficiency t at blunting the Old Boys’ attacks, made him the key Hgure s In university’s win. i Old Boys were by no means disgraced, for they played some • excellent hockey, but they - could not match the skilled s combination of University. I T. Wall tackled expertly, and J. Marshall was an active I centre-half who did his best - to stem the tide of the Uni- • versity attacks.
_ SELWYH V. LINWOOD 0.8. "selwyn was better organised, both on attack and defence, and the relatively inexperienced Linwood team, although trying to play attacking hockey, too often fell down on fundamentals. A. Waters, at inside-right, played particularly well for Selwyn; his passing and stickwork were an important factor In his team’s win. HAREWOOD v. SYDENHAM Sydenham showed surprising resistance at the start of the match when Harewood’s passing was uncontrolled. But once Harewood settled down it dominated the match, having much the better cohesion between its forwards and halves. HADLEY 0.8. V. WOOLSTON Woolston was unlucky In the early stages when two goals were disallowed, but after that brief flutter Hagley took charge, and its more positive play gained it an easy win.
