Early Prints Sold Out

The facsimile edition of “Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand,” by S. C. Brees, has been sold out and the publishers, Avon Fine Prints, Ltd, of Christchurch, are delighted.

This scarce book is limited to 1000 copies. At 60 dollars it is the most expensive New Zealand book produced so far this .year. A feature is that a printed list of the names of subscribers will be included in the book. Subscribers include the Duke of Edinburgh, collectors, libraries, universities, and the man in the street. Some individuals have ordered four copies. Copies of the book will be

sent to subscribers in Australia, the United States, Canada, Ghana, and even Venezuela.

The book is being printed in Hastings by Pictorial Publications, Ltd. It will contain 67 coloured views on 22 plates with 36 pages of descriptive text by the artist. Mrs E. M. Patterson, assistant to the young Christchurch publisher, Mr D. G. Ellis, said that the response indicated that the New Zealander was appreciative of good art and craftsmanship. This is the first book published by the Christchurch company which normally specialises in the publication of limited editions, historical maps and colour prints of towns in the early days of New Zealand settlement. “Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand” is taking nine months to produce and will not be sent out to the sub-

scribers until September. Mrs Patterson said the plates for the book would then be destroyed. In June the company will release four prints for sale in Australia of early Melbourne. These will be limited to 2000 sets. All are expected to be sold in Australia and there are no plans to market them in New Zealand.

Rumanian Wins. —J. Tiriac (Rumania) beat M. Riessen (United States), 8-6. 6-0, 1-6, 6-4. to win the men’s singles final of the Palermo international tennis tournament.
