Girl Wins Holiday For Family Of 10

When an 11-year-old Auckland girl, Maria Gruitjers, won a colouring competition and the prize of a two-day holiday in Christchurch for her parents and brothers and sisters, the organisers were shocked.

The girl had seven brothers and sisters. The terms of the competition offered a holiday for the winner and her parents and brothers and sisters under the age of 16. The eight children are between the ages of six months and 13.

Mrs W. Gruitjers, said last evening that it was the first holiday the family had had for 15 years. She came to New Zealand with

her husband from Holland 15 years ago and settled In Auckland.

Mr Gruitjers is a keeper at the Auckland zoo and works every week-end. The family arrived in Christchurch yesterday by air from Auckland —it was the first flight for each of them—and went sightseeing in the city. There will be more sightseeing today and they will fly back to Auckland this evening.

The competition was sponsored by KerrldgeOdeon, Ltd, the Independent Grocers’ Association, and the National Airways Corporation.
