News that the United Nations Secretary-General (U Thant) said the start of acti ual negotiations between Washington and Hanoi is imminent caused heavy afternoon trading. The volume was 14.23 m shares compared with Wednesday’s record 20.41 m. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 13.06 to 905.69. London Stocks Share indices readied record peaks at the end of a very active week on the London Stock Market this week.

A major influence was President Johnson’s moves to start Vietnam talks. The common market decision to speed up tariff cuts was another major simulus.
