HEADMASTER SHOT DEADATSCHOOL

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 10.
The headmaster of Inglewood High School, Alexander Stuart Black, was shot dead just outside his office inside the school soon after 2 pan. today.
A youth was located after the armed offenders squad surrounded a farmhouse at Inglewood.
He was later arrested and will appear on a murder charge in the Magistrate’s Court at New Plymouth tomorrow.
Police from New Plymouth, Stratford and Hawera, as well as the armed offenders squad and the New Plymouth C. 1.8. rushed to the school as soon as they were notified of the incident. More than 25 members of the police under the supervision of Detective Senior Sergeant J. P. Crozier assisted.
The armed offenders squads from Wanganui and Palmerston North were also called in. Loud Hailer At 4 p.m. the armed offenders squad surrounded the farmhouse and called to the youth through a loud hailer. Soon after, Mr Crozier and Detective Constable A. Tos-
land entered the house but met no resistance. It is believed that Mr Black was shot at close range by a small calibre weapon. He died almost immediately. A number of people, including several school pupils, were interviewed at the school tonight in connection with the incident. Mr Black, who was 43, was l
married and had three children. He was the school’s third headmaster and had taken up his appointment in February, 1966. He held a master’s degree in geography from the University of Auckland. He had been head of the geography department at Westlake Boys’ High School, Auckland, before going to Inglewood.
