Advertisements On Radio
Sir,—During the last few days much publicity has been given to the fact that 3YD is changing its call sign. But the N.Z.B.C. forgot to mention that it was introducing advertising on the “Top Sixty Show” from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m and from 10 p.m. to 12 p.m. This was a concession to the yearning of several months ago for private broadcasting stations, and it was agreed that there would be no advertising. Now, suddenly, without informing the listeners, the N.Z.B.C. removes this one, pleasant shelter from the onslaught of advertisements. And l object.—Yours, etc., DISILLUSIONED LISTENER. April 2, 1968. (The public relations officer of the N.Z.8.C., Mr L. Boyes, replies: "Extended hours for the YD (now ZM) stations were publicly announced by the chairman of the N.Z.8.C., ™ r C. A. McFarlane, on November 9, 1966. I quote from his release: ‘The new hours of broadcast will be devoted mainly to tunes from •u top charts and other pop releases . . ttle new hours will be filled on a non-advertising basis to permit private con tractors to supply programmes at a later date if this were found to be feasible. It was not therefore agreed that there would be no advertising in the future, 1 and when International Adertisers, Ltd, were awarded a ■ contract to supply 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. to mid--1 night .programmes over IYD Auckland from September 7, 1967, this private supplier immediately introduced advertising to these pop-tvpe musical programmes. The N.Z.B.C. introduced advertising on April 1 when 2ZM and 3ZM changed their call signs.”]
