Money For Aged
Christchurch residents gave 54771 in the recent street appeal held by the Christchurch Aged People's Welfare Council. “This is indeed a magnificent response from our friends throughout the city," said the secretary (Mrs M. E. Lawrie) yesterday. Mrs Lawrie thanked all who gave so generously of money and goods and those who assisted in collecting and organising.
Lighting Proposed
An estimate for floodlighting the oval at the Addington Show Grounds is to be sought by the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s grounds committee. Mr H. G. Stephens, chairman of the committee, said yesterday that this was being investigated as a means of increasing revenue. The oval could then be used for night events.
Open-Air Service
The annual open-air combined Easter service of the congregations of the Salvation Army Citadel, the Durham Street Methodist Church and the Methodist Central Mission, Cambridge Terrace, will be held in Victoria Square on Sunday at 7 a.m. The service will be conducted by Major R.
Knight, an officer of the City Corps of the Salvation Army. If it is wet the service will be held in the Citadel.
Beach Barbecue
The Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt) will give an address on numerality at a beach barbecue organised by the Papanui Ecumenical Youth Council, to be held at Spencer Park on May 5 at 4.30 pan. The council includes members from Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist churches in Papanui.
Pharmacy Training
There is no likelihood of pharmacy being taught at the Christchurch Technical Institute, according to its principal (Mr D. W. Lyall). This training was costly and was now centralised in Wellington he said at a meeting of the institute's board of governors when Mr N. S. Wills asked him to comment on a report that New Zealand qualifications in pharmacy would not be acceptable in Britain much longer.
