Presbyterian Appointments
Appreciation of the work done by the Rev. D. G. Shaw during his 15 years as a member of the Christchurch Presbytery, was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Presbytery on Tuesday.
Mr Shaw, who was minister of St Stephen’s Church for more than seven years, and hospital chaplain for the last seven years and a half, will leave Christchurch later this month for the United States for further training in chaplaincy work and supervision. During his training, which will keep him in the United States for several years, he will study at a theological seminary run by the North American Baptist Church in Chester, near Philadelphia. Dr Martin Luther King also trained at this seminary.
A farewell for Mr and Mrs Shaw will be held at St Stephen’s Church on April 17. The Presbytery approved the appointment of the Rev. I. G. Pierce as second minister at St Mark’s Church, Upper Riccarton, to be effective from August 1. In a report from the steering committee, the convener (the Rev. R. B. Tait) said that a service of welcome would be arranged for the Rev. A. S. McKenzie who had been posted to Bumham MilitaryCamp as chaplain to the forces from May 8. A letter from the Rev. W. D. Francis requesting transfer to the Presbytery of Manawatu was approved. Mr Francis, who served as a student in the Christchurch Presbytery, has been teaching at the Onesua High School in the New Hebrides since 1959.
