MELBOURNE.
The New Zealand men’s team suffered two more defeats, its fifth and sixth in succession, in the South-East Asia Pacific area table tennis championships yesterday.
Once more the losses were clear-cut, by 3-0, to the Philippines in the morning and Australia in the afternoon.
The women’s team was also outplayed by South Korea. Miss D. Wade, of Tauranga, reached 11 points in one game of her single against Yoon Ki Suk. This was the only game in which the New Zealand women scored double figures, in their worst beating of the tournament. BEST PERFORMANCE I In the morning, the New Zealand men had one of their best performances against the strong team from the Philippines. The scores in the individual rubbers were close. M. Borlase (Wellington), [with strong attacking play, I won the second game against F. Ybanez, but the Filipino attacked in the third and forced Borlase on to the defensive.
Ybanez won the third game, 21-13, to give the Philippines a 24) lead in the match, and then he and R. Domingo beat Borlase and A. Tomlinson, of Auckland, in straight games.. Earlier, the New Zealand captain, Tomlinson, showing his best form so far in the tournament, went down fightling against Domingo in an entertaining match, which developed into a battle of wits between the two experienced i players.
However, the New Zealand men played disappointingly against Australia. They had high hopes of a victory but the Australians produced their best form of the tournament, to score a crushing win without dropping a game.
