BOKARO (Northern India), April 7.
The Indian Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, yesterday launched the construction of the Soviet-aided Bokaro steel plant, which will ultimately produce four million tons of ingot metal a year, and be the fourth State-owned steel works in India. Mrs Gandhi said the Bokaro plant, which is to have the biggest blast furnace in Asia, would go a long way towards strengthening India’s economic base.
“It is very necessary to undertake such works, to banish poverty, illiteracy and backwardness,” she said.
