OLYMPIC GAMES

Negro Ban Possible

(N.Z. Press Assn, —Copyright) LUSAKA (Zambia), April 6. At least 90 per cent of American Negro athletes would boycott the Mexico Olympic Games over the killing of Dr Martin Luther King and the admission of South Africa, a Negro athlete said yesterday. Moses Mayfield, one of eight United States runners on an African good-will tour, said most Negro athletes had indicated they would support decisions by African and Asian countries condemning South Africa’s admission to the Games. “Likewise, we feel we should show our indignation and disapproval of the existing segregationary state of affairs in American life by lending support to the African and Asian cause on this issue,” he said. “It is well and good to be treated as equals in Mexico but when we come to the United States this oneness ceases at the airport.” He said the Olympic Games committee could not afford to lose 50-plus African and Asian countries “just to allow one racialist State to compete.”
