NAUSORI BRILLIANT

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Nausori settled any other claims there might have been on favouritism for the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie next week-end with his win at Te Aroha on Saturday. Carrying 61b more than his weight in the big Auckland mile, Nausori ran away from Barellan and the rest. He cannot be rehandicapped for Ellerslie.

The weights for the Easter Handicap and other events on the first day of the Auckland autumn meeting were declared early last week, jus after Nausori failed in a handicap at Tauranga. The influence of Tauranga form undoubtedly had much to do with his being in the Easter with Bst 21b.

Any sort of a showing at the Bay of Plenty meeting must have brought Nausori more weight. A win like the one he scored at Te Aroha on Saturday would have taken him to Bst 81b or thereabouts. As it is, he will go to Ellerslie looking in every way the pick of the handicap.

As an example he will be meeting Barellan, which he best by three and a half lengths in the Easter Trial last Saturday, 111 b better in the big mile this week.

The need of a race told against Nausori when he competed at Tauranga. Without doing anything of much account in his training he Improved considerably in condition between then and Te Aroha and it is more than likely he derived further benefit from his latest race.

AWAY WELL From wide at the start Nausori was quickly fifth behind Barellan, Markable, Miss Lynette, and Prince Petary. He kept up easily while Barellan set the pace by a couple of lengths past the half mile, and when his rider. B. F. Andrews, asked him to improve near the three furlongs he was on Barellan’s heels in a moment.

Barellan clung to his lead for a bit in the run home but Nausori was quite obviously well in command a furlong and a half out. Behind Barellan. the field was thoroughly beaten. Nausori drew clear away near the finish and Barellan was as

easily second from Bywon. An indication of the beating Nausori gave most of his opponents was that eight lengths separated first and fifth (Ruakiwi Lass). The tailenders, several of whom hardly had a place in the field, were down the track.

Sunset Fair, after a string of unplaced performances, came back to form with a vengeance in the first leg of the T.A.B. double, the Commodore Plate.

From last with six furlongs to go Sunset Fair rushed forward to trail the leaders, Earl Marshall. Punjabi and Wairere Lass, into the home straight. In the last furlongs he shot clear to win easily.

The weather was overcast and humid and the track soft to start with but no worse than easy for the last four events.
