N.Z. Forests Outstrip Their Processing

WELLINGTON, April 6.
New Zealand at present had more timber than it could process, the Minister of Forests (Mr Maclntyre) said in Rotorua.
He was speaking to a conference of the Australian and New Zealand Pulp and Paper Industry Technical Association.
“To people of your technology, exporting wood in such a crude form as logs may dismay you,” said Mr Maclntyre. “But there are two good reasons why New Zealand is exporting logs to Japan. “The first is that it pays
us to do this. At current prices New Zealand is earning as much as 38c a cubic foot for high-grade radiata pine.
“The second reason is that —at the moment—we have more wood available than we can process in New Zealand. Our exotic forests have astounded experts everywhere with their growth, and are producing huge quantities of wood sooner than those who planted them would have believed possible." New Zealand was planning a large expansion of its forest industry late this century, said Mr Maclntyre.
