Nichols Win Canoeing
The Nichols family dominated the Rothmans 10-mile Avon canoe race organised by the Arawa Canoe Club from the Edmond Band Rotunda to the Pleasant Point jetty.
E. Nichols, partnered by A. Lavender, took 12 minutes off the race record in the doubles: his wife, Mrs S. Nichols, was the runner-up to her daughter, Miss J. Nichols, in the women's race, and the sons, Chris and John, won the junior singles and racing classes respectively. Results:
Senior.—Singles: C. Cook 1, J. Campbell 2, N. Duckmanton 3. Time, 1:33.0. Doubles: E. Nichols and A. Lavender 1, R. Goodwill and B. Leask 2, J. De Malmanche and R. Nichols 3. Time: 1:12.0 (record). Racing: T. Wilder 1, R. Paye 2, M. Lord 3. Time: 1:19.0.
Junior. —Singles: C. Nichols 1, D. Newton 2, W. Bond 3. Time: 1:38.0. Doubles: D. Barton and M. Burgess 1, L. White and R. Widdup 2. Time: 1:34.0. Racing: J. Nichols 1, M. Coulter 2, M. Bartley 3. Time: 1:26.0.
