Javelin Candidates Show Their Form
Three of the five Javelins which will represent their clubs in the New Zealand Javelin championships next week-end in Auckland, had fine final performances over the week-end.
Top-rated with a good chance for major honours will be Cirrus (A. F. and R. Burgess, Canterbury), but both Giavelina (W. H. Beere and S. Tiller, Christchurch), and Ra (C. White and B. Robertson, Christchurch), have been sailing well enough to win or place well.
The three crews have been working on their boats, tuning and trying to improve their performance over the last few weeks, and will be well prepared for hard racing.
The weather at the weekend was again quite glorious for sailing and there were good fleets out for the final races at two of the clubs, Christchurch and Canterbury. There was some humour at the Chrstchurch club on Saturday when the annual fathers’ race in P class was sailed. Started in a drifter, there was considerable cheating and sculling in the preliminary jockeying for good starting positions but once the gun went it developed into a serious race with all the stealth, cunning and concentration of a world championship title H. L. England dominated with some fine sailing but a fast-finishing A. J. Ebert nearly caused an upset P. G. Mander, out of retirement to sail his son’s Sabot displayed all the old skills to finish third but retired for hitting a mark of the course. The handicap winner, on a weight-for-age basis, was D J. Triggs. Yesterday in a fighting finish Finn skipper F. Dickson narrowly headed off J, S.
Wearn in one of the surprise upsets in club racing. And again the O.K. skipper D. S. Ineson sailed well above himself and a lot of the others.
