ADVISORS TO POPE
27 Of Laity Named
(N Z Press Assn. —Copyright) VATICAN CITY, April 7.
Pope Paul yesterday named 27 members of the Roman Catholic laity, including one woman, as consultants to the Vatican Government in such special fields as law, medicine, art and broadcasting. One appointee, Professor Francesco Vita, a 65-year-old economist and former rector of Milan’s Catholic University, died at Milan a few hours after the announcement was made.
Most of the appointees were Italians. Among them were eight members of Rome’s “black nobility” who were all fired last week when the Pope abolished the Papal Court and created in its place a more simple and functional “papal household.”
Six foreigners were named as honorary consultants. Twenty-one Italians, including the noblemen, were named full-time consultants.
