Baillies 24-hr run

Although he failed to finish the New Zealand marathon a few weeks ago, W. D. Baillie is still keen to make bis attempt on the world 24-hour record. The attempt will be made at Alexander Park Raceway on April 19 and 20. The record, held by South Africa’s W. Hayward, stands at 159 miles 562 yards. It was set in England five years ago, Baillie, and several other runners, will be sponsored to the extent of SI a mile by various business organisations. The money will be shared by the Deaf Olym-

pic Appeal and the Auckland Sheltered Workshop. Accompanying Baillie, at least in the initial stages of the run, will be many of New Zealand's world ranked athletes of a few years ago. Among them will be P. G. Snell, N. I. Scott, B. Magee, M. G. Halberg, and J. L. Davies. The New Zealand marathon champion, J. L. Julian, and M. Ryan, and I. Keats have agreed to take part. The national champions for one, three and six miles, D. Sirl, R. Maddaford and E. Maguire, will also run. About S3OOO is expected to be raised.
