More Blood Issued

An increase in the amount of blood issued to hospitals in the Christchurch, Ashburton, Rangiora and West Coast areas by the Christchurch Blood Transfusion Service is reported for last year. The secretary (Mr A. T. Sindlen) said yesterday that 8565 units of blood were issued in the last 12 months, compared with 7593 last year. “It appears that there is an increased demand for more blood, particularly from private hospitals,” he said. The last year was also a record for donations to the service, said Mr Sindlen. Figures for blood donations at the rooms at Christchurch Hospital, and for the mobile unit, showed that 12,965 units were collected last year, compared with 12,285 units in 1966-67, an increase of 680 units.

A drop of 181 in new donors enrolled, was explained by the fact that in 1966-67 the mobile unit had enrolled donors in the Ashburton and Hornby areas for the first time.
