“Coasters Do Not Drink More”
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, April 2. The West Coaster did not consume more liquor than his contemporaries in other areas, an inspector of licensed premises (Mr R. W. Jenkins) told the Licensing Control Commission, in Greymouth today.
Mr Jenkins, in his report, added: “Whatever other special characteristics these people may claim, they are very normal in this respect.” The expenditure of $1.34 a head weekly was not high when allowance was made for the contribution of visitors. “The average age in an area of declining populations tends to be higher, and if computations were made on
adult populations only, the West Coast demand might prove slightly lower than the New Zealand average,” said Mr Jenkins.
“Though the West Coasters cannot be said to consume more or spend more, it is true that they are loyal to their bar rooms. Sales of flagons and bottles for offpremises consumption is a very minor portion of the hotel trade.”
