Cancer Unit Delayed
Christchurch’s linear accelerator for deep-ray cancer treatment will not be delivered from the United States until the end of this year. It was reported to yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board that the manufacturers had asked if the board would like delivery delayed until November or December. This will not involve any extra cost and could help the board with housing the machine. The visit of a technician to the United States has been accordingly delayed.
Mr L. A. Bennett said a planning group had thoroughly considered the proposal which was entirely satisfactory. Mr H. O. Hills said considerable inconvenience with storage Would be saved, as a unit of this type would probably have to be stored somewhere where temperature control was possible. Alterations and additions to the radiotherapy department are planned for the
housing of the machine, and working drawings for all parts of the work have been received. It was also reported that specifications for electrical and mechanical services were completed. Specification for the main contract was being prepared.
