Four Of Finalists Bred In N.Z.
Four of the 10 horses to qualify for the $BOOO New South Wales’Pacers' Derby on Friday night were bred in New Zealand.
The field is one of the strongest to contest the classic and includes the winners of the Great Northern Derby Stakes at Alexandra Park, the Western Australian Derby, the Victorian Pacing Derby and the Sydney Sires’ Produce Stakes. Cardinal Garrison (Garrison Hanover—Roschana) created a record when he won his qualifying heat last Friday night, beating Wee Buttons (Flying Song—Rowan Star) and Dashing Brucus. a son of the New Zea-land-bred stallion. Brucus. Lights Out, by Local Light, finished fourth, but did not qualify for the final. Cardinal Garrisions record was short-lived as the second
heat winner. Frosty Monarch, by Raider Frost, paced the 111 furlongs in 2min 56 3-ssec. a mile rate of better than 2min 2sec. He beat another son of Raider Frost in Koala Frost, with Ascot King (Deep Adios— Lurcnne), winner of the Victorian Pacing Derby, third, and Cocky Raider, a good fourth. All four place-getters in this heat qualified for the final.
The winner’s time was seven seconds faster than the previous best for the distance by a three-year-old.
The Victorian colt. Adios Green, by Dick Adios, won the slowly-run third heat from the Western Australian Derby winner. Master Clan, with Royal Society (Caduceus Rose Brigade) in third place. Royal Society won the Sydney Sires’ Produce Stakes earlier in the season.
