Carmichael And Makeba To Wed
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, March 18. The singer, Miriam Makeba, has announced that she will marry the black power advocate, S t o k e 1 y Carmichael, but no date has yet been set for the wedding. The 35-year-old South Afri-can-born singer, famous for her click songs in her native Xhosa tribal tongue, made the announcement through her press agent, Richard Gersh. Mr Gersh said she was currently in Jamaica to open a boutique there. Carmichael, the 27-year-old former chief and now the Washington-based field secretary of the Student Nonviolent Co-ordinating Committee, was not available for comment. Miss Makeba was previously married to the South Africanborn trumpeter Hugh Masa-
kela, now also working in America. Carmichael, who was replaced as S.N.C.C. chairman by H. Rap Brown last May. had his passport taken away by the United States authorities last December after visiting Cuba and North Vietnam during a five-month world tour.
