Whole-Milk Biscuits SALES TO ALLERGY SUFFERERS IN N.Z.
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 18. The New Zealand-developed whole-milk biscuit will be sold in New Zealand for children who have a definite allergy to liquid milk or to powdered milk, at a cost of 25c a packet of 12
Mr H. H. Inness, of Auckland, executive director of the Food Bank of New Zealand, co-sponsors of the milk biscuit with the Dairy Board, said today that full commercial sales of the biscuit in New Zealand were neither desirable nor practical at present. The biscuit had been devised to make whole milk available in an easy and almost foolproof form for distribution to children suffering from protein hunger in outlying and primitive areas where milk, even in powder form, was not a practical proposition, said Mr Innes.
Answering a suggestion that the biscuit should be available commercially in New Zealand, Mr Innes said: “With limited production it
is obvious that our moral requirement is to use the biscuit to the maximum extent for the vital purposes already stated.” Allergy Cases However, the Food Bank and the Dairy Board recognised that some children had a definite allergy to liquid milk or to powdered milk. “In such cases the Food Bank is arranging through
Plunket societies and doctors that supplies of the biscuit, on certification, will be made available on a cost basis only," he said.
This would be, at present, 25c for a packet of 12 biscuits —the equivalent of three pints of whole milk.
“This should meet the only legitimate need for the wholemilk biscuit in this country,” said Mr Innes.
