“STARVING FOR TRADESMEN”
New Zealand was starving for good tradesmen and the volume of exports was suffering in consequence, Mr R. H. Stewart told the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association last evening.
“Many of us are tooling for more exports but we are being denied this by the shortage of skilled men. Many workshops are working overtime,” he said. “Skilled men are just as hard to get now as they ire in good times. We have so small a pool we cannot hope to increase our exports." Mr W. H. Price said the association should be pressing the Government to get on with more immigration of skilled men. “New Zealand is an underpopulated country in spite of present difficulties. There should be steady immigration.”
Mr E. Smith quoted the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae) as saying that because of a decline in immigration, housing targets would have to be reviewed.
Mr Smith quoted newspaper reports that hundreds of Britons had been inquiring about migrating to New Zealand. In London the New Zealand migration authorities had been receiving as many as 1700 inquiries a week, he said.
The meeting decided to ask the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation to discuss the question at its next meeting.
