Approval For Car Park In Lincoln Rd
An application by the Addington Businessmen’s Association to establish an off-street car park at Lincoln Road was granted by the Riccarton Borough Council last evening subject to the Christchurch City Council withdrawing an objection to the application.
The town planning committee’s report said the objection was subject to withdrawal provided certain conditions were imposed. The conditions had been agreed to by the applicant, the report said.
The conditions included the erection of specified barriers and fences, and that vehicle crossings, planting, landscaping, lighting, and tidyness should be approved by the borough engineer (Mr R. A. Upston).
Cr R. S. Lester said he was amazed at the “rigid” conditions. The people concerned were trying to do something for themselves. Cr D. A. Anderson said the conditions were not onerous and the Mayor (Mr E. J. Bradshaw) said the conditions were not unusual.
Change in Scheme.—The council approved steps to change the provisions of the borough district scheme by excluding gymnasiums and training sheds as a conditional use in the residential A zone. It was decided to notify the Marist Rugby Football Club of the council’s intention.
Pedestrian Crossing. The council agreed to spend an extra $l9O installing a pedestrian crossing at the Blenheim Road-Clarence Street intersection.
Less Building. Building figures were down about 50 per cent, and if it were not for one project, they would probably be at a record low level for the borough, Cr R. S. Lester reported. Rubbish.—The finance and works committees should discuss a proposal for an extra rubbish collection service, the council decided. Street Name. —lt was decided to start legal procedures to change the name of Railway Terrace to Mona Vale Avenue. No objections had been received, the finance and by-laws committee reported. Pensioners’ Cottages. A sub-committee should formulate policy on building pensioners’ cottages. There was a waiting list of 67 for such cottages, Cr R. W. J. Harrington reported. Children’s Library.—lt was decided the question of providing a children’s library should be investigated by the finance and by-laws committee.
Returning To Earth.—Echo 1, the world’s first reflector communications satellite, is expected to return to earth soon, battered and dented after more than seven years in space. The sphere's skin has. been wrinkled like a prune after being battered by meteoroids and space dust, Cape Kennedy (Florida), March 18.
