CALL FOR REPORT
Riccarton Water
The possibility of fluoridating the Riccarton borough water supply and the costs of doing so will be the subject of a report by the borough engineer (Mr R. A. Upston), the Riccarton Borough Council decided last evening. This was recommended in the report of the works committee, which said a letter from the Canterbury branch of the Dental Association advising its support for any proposal for fluoridation had been received. “To rush into this at this stage would be wrong,” Cr R. S. Lester said in presenting the committee’s report. Cr R. W. J. Harrington said the council had previously decided it was in favour of fluoridation, and asked if fluoridation would automatically result if the costs were reasonable. The answer must be no, said the Mayor (Mr E. J. Bradshaw). The decision favouring fluoridation had been made by a previous council and did not bind the present council. The committee had been very divided on the issue, Cr Lester said.
